Conical Rings & Travellers

Conical Rings

The Conical ring, with its distinctive inclined inside traveller bearing surface, is a design which not only gives excellent ring / traveller contact, but also allows the traveller to move freely up and down the bearing to compensate for variations in yarn tension. The resulting ring and traveller combination gives excellent speed, regularity of yarn tension and processing efficiency, especially where weak or fine yarns are being spun. This type of ring is particularly suitable for processing wool, worsted and semi-worsted material. Standard Conical rings are available in depths of 6.3, 9.1, 11.1 and 17.4 mm, and can be made from either Steel or PSM (Porous Sintered Metal) material.

Steel Rings are made from the highest quality steel and offer durability, simplicity and long life. Lubrication is supplied to the traveller bearing area by a wick system. The ring can have several pairs of lubrication points, depending on the ring size and use.

The table below shows the standard number of lubrication points that we recommend.

PSM Rings offer the advantage of controlled lubrication as and when the traveller requires it, with the resulting benefits of yarn cleanliness and regularity of yarn tension. PSM material for conical rings should only be chosen when nylon or light weight steel travellers are to be used. There are several different designs of Conical PSM ring as shown below. (Please see our PSM Ring brochure for additional information).

Conical Travellers

Conical Travellers can be supplied in either Steel or Temlon material. The most common type is the steel traveller but where weights permit, Temlon travellers can be used. Temlon travellers will reduce the wear on the rings and increase running efficiency. Where steel travellers are to be used on PSM rings, it is important that only light weight travellers are chosen to avoid premature wear of the ring.

Further details of the full range of traveller shapes and sizes can be obtained from the Steel Conical Traveller and Temlon Traveller brochures.
